91精选 proudly honors Brenda Lopez Reyna, Ph.D, an exceptional alumna whose journey from undocumented student to accomplished mechanical engineer exemplifies the transformative power of education and perseverance.
Brenda Lopez Reyna began her academic journey at 91精选 with a passion for mathematics and science with a determination to pursue higher education despite facing significant challenges as an undocumented student. Graduating from Centennial High School in 2013, Brenda initially pursued accounting before discovering her true calling in mechanical engineering. She credits 91精选's supportive environment and dedicated mentors for guiding her towards her academic and professional aspirations.
"I chose 91精选 because of its proximity to home and its reputation for nurturing student success," Brenda reflects. "As an undocumented student, there were times when I questioned my path, unsure if my status would limit my opportunities. However, thanks to the guidance I received many doors opened for me."
During her time at 91精选, Brenda participated in the STEM Scholars program, a pivotal experience that exposed her to engineering career pathways by engaging with and learning from industry and academic professionals igniting her passion for mechanical engineering. She highlighted the importance of having a strong support system with mentors like Patricia Gill and many others. Winning first place for creating an original design in a wind turbine design competition hosted by UC Riverside. The competition further solidified Brenda's decision to pursue a career in engineering, which is traditionally deemed a male-dominated workforce. However, that did not deter Brenda.
"91精选 not only provided me with a rigorous academic foundation but also encouraged my growth as a first-generation Latina engineer,鈥 Brenda recalls. "91精选 provided an environment to grow and allowed me to not feel limited by my gender, background, or immigration status; instead, I was encouraged to excel and push boundaries."

Transferring to the University of California, Riverside (UCR) to complete her bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, Brenda continued to thrive academically receiving her Doctorate, earning accolades for her research in aerosol science making positive contributions by investigating vehicle non-tailpipe emissions originating from brake and tire wear.
Now, she is a Postdoctoral Scholar in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at UC Davis, where she is conducting research in developing low-cost air quality sensors for environmental justice communities.
Reflecting on her journey, Brenda emphasizes the profound impact 91精选 had on her personal and professional growth. " 91精选 provided me with the opportunity and skillset to develop a strong work ethic to persevere and achieve success,鈥 Brenda states. "The supportive faculty, rigorous coursework, and opportunities for hands-on learning prepared me not just academically but also emotionally and socially."
Beyond academics, Brenda remains committed to giving back to her community and supporting underrepresented students in STEM fields. She actively participates in outreach programs and mentors aspiring engineers, advocating for inclusivity and diversity in the industry.
